Popular Viking Jewelry

We have a variety of popular Viking jewelry in our assortment. The most well-known Viking jewelry is, as we mentioned, Thor's hammer. There are several different models and most are usually worn as necklaces, but we also have exciting models of bracelets with this symbol.

Other symbols that are appreciated among our Viking jewelry are Valknut - a symbol connected to Odin and Vegvisir which is sometimes called the Viking compass and is a symbol which has originally been brought from Iceland.

A big seller is also king link, which are chains made of rings that are woven together in a special way to create strong and decorative links. The use of rings that are tied together was very popular in the Viking Age and was used not only in jewelry but of course also to create protective chain mail for battle.

In our assortment you will also find more fantasy-oriented Viking jewelry that takes its inspiration from everything from Viking ships and the mythical Fenris wolf to the tree of life Yggdrasil, dragons and many other phenomena that occur in the Edda and Viking Age heroic tales.

TV series like Vikings and films in which Vikings appear have contributed to making Viking jewelry even more popular and with us you will find a wide range of choose between.

The exciting history of the Vikings

The Viking Age was the last period of the Iron Age in the Scandinavian countries. It is usually said that it fell roughly between the 7th century and the early 12th century, which was also the time of the break between asatro and Christianity in the Nordics. However, not everyone in society was called a Viking, rather it seems to have been about groups that set out on war and raiding expeditions. But over time, the concept has shifted and when you talk about Vikings today, most probably think of people who lived during this time period in the Nordic countries.

People during the Viking Age cared about their appearance and liked to adorn themselves with simple iron jewelry as well as exclusive gold links. They also had clothes in richly colored fabrics with beautiful weaves and decorative ribbons. So the image that is sometimes seen in modern films is not quite right. Of course, poor people walked around in brown and gray clothes, but those who could afford it wore a little "bling" and strong colors. Using richly decorated Viking jewelry is therefore absolutely right if you want to dress in Viking style.

Several of our Viking jewelry in the store have a design based on archaeological findings. For example Torshammers have been found in a variety of different models in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and to the east where the Vikings traveled to conduct trade and raids. There are also many examples of the royal links in our history museums in Sweden as well as other Scandinavian countries.

Vegvisir is a magical protective and guiding symbol.

What is written in the Huld Manuscript about the Vegvisor is the following text:
"Nose. XXVII + XXIX. Vegvisir.Beri mamm stafi eisesa á sér villist mamm ekki í hríðum né wondu veðri þó ókunnugur sá.”
Translation:
"If this sign is worn, one will never lose one's way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is not known."
"The wearer of this symbol will not lose his way during storms and bad weather, even if he does not know of his destination".

Vegvisir is originally mentioned in two sources, partly in the Icelandic collection of wands of wizards called Galdrabok (The Magister Book) which were originally manuals for magic and the Huld Manuscript from the 19th century by Geir Vigfusson.

Fen Alraun has a theory based on that the symbol would contain 8 different protective spells on each staff, which means that as a whole it becomes a powerful staff spell that protects against many different kinds of obstacles that can cause you to lose your way.
Nor does he consider it necessary to understand the meaning of each syllable:
As long as it is drawn correctly each time, it will retain its power.

The shape of the symbol in the Huld Manuscript is square while that from Galdraskræða Skugga is designed to fit in a circle. The drawing was made for Ólafur Davíðsson.
Fen Alraun writes that by making a small change, in this case making the rods the same length, affects the power of magic very little. This means that Vegvisir does at least as well in a circular version inside a circle.
There is no change in the magic because the symbols themselves have not changed.

Beri mamm stafi ésa á sér villist mamm ekki íhríðum né bado veðri þó ókunnugur sá

Carry these staves with you and you won't get lost in storms or bad weather, even though in unfamiliar surrounds.

How to divination with runes

The rune line that was mainly used in divination is the Old Norse 24 rune futhark which arose around 200 years after Christ. It is called futhark because the first 6 runes form the word futhark; feh, ur, thurs, ass, reid and ken.

The purpose of the runes was mainly to record various things but also for divination and spells. Divination with runes is an ancient tool that has close contact with our ancestors and their traditions.

One way of divination is to put three runes in a row; one for past, present and future. A rune for each Norn; Urd, Verdandi and Skuld. Norns are goddesses of fate in Old Norse mythology. According to the myth, they live at the Urdabrun, which is at the roots of the World Tree Yggdrasil. They symbolize man's birth, life, death and destiny. The three goddesses of fate weave the destiny of man in the following way:

Urd Represents destinies and the past, she spins the thread in the web of life. She has to do with birth and the past.

Verdendi stands for being and the present, she spins the thread in the web of life.

Guilt stands for the future, it tears the thread from the fabric of life and has to do with death.

No one can see or has ever seen their faces, no one knows whether they are young, old, beautiful or ugly.

The runes are divided into three different families;

Freya's clan: Feh, Ur, Thurs, Ass, Reid, Ken, Gebo and Wynja.

Heimdal's house: Hagal, Naud, Iss, Jara, Eoh, Pertha, Algiz and Sol.

Tyr's family: Tyr, Bjarka, Eih, Madr, Lagu, Ing, Dagaz and Odal.

Note! the runes can be spelled in different ways.
