Yggdrasil – a symbol of eternal connection

Yggdrasil, Learned, or Mimer's tree, is the name of the world's largest tree and roughly means: "horse of the terrible storm god", from Ygg, a nickname for Odin, and Icelandic drasil, horse). From its branches, which cover the whole sky, dew falls over the world. Beneath this ash (sometimes called oak or yew) is the most sacred place where the gods gather daily for things.

Yggdrasil has three major roots. The first root goes to the abode of humans (Midgard) and the abode of the gods (Asgard). The second root goes to the abode of the giants (Jotunheim or Utgård) and the third root goes to the underworld (Nifelheim), on the north side of the tree.

Under each of these roots is a well. Under the first root is the Urdarbrunnen ("well of fate"). There the gods keep their things. Under the second root lies Mimer's well, the source of wisdom and knowledge, and under the third root the river Vergelmer is born. The three Norns Urd, Skuld and Verdandi live by the ash Yggdrasil's roots near the Urdarwell where they collect the water and the white sand which they then wash over Yggdrasil's roots to prevent its trunk and branches from withering.

In Yggdrasil's crown live four stags: Dain, Dvalin, Duneyr and Duratror. They graze on the leaves of the tree. At the top sits the eagle Hräsvelg with the hawk Väderfölne (Veðrfölnir) placed between its eyes. The eagle creates wind by beating its wings. There is also the rooster Gullinkambe (Viðofnir) or Gyllenkam who keeps track of night and day.

The squirrel Ratatosk is a messenger who runs up and down the trunk of the tree between the eagle and the dragon (or serpent) Nidhögg (Niðhöggr) at the root of the tree. Hräsvelg and Nidhögg are in constant feud with each other and are not on good terms with each other themselves. Nidhögg gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil (according to some sources along with many other snakes), and on the roof of Valhall stands the stag Eiktyrner (Eikþyrnir) and three other stags and the goat Heidrun, gnawing on its foliage.

Despite all these animals that eat the tree, the tree is always green, because the Norns who live under its branches water it with water from the Urdarbrunnen.

The name Yggdrasil comes from the fact that it was in Yggdrasil that Odin sacrificed himself by hanging to learn the secret of the runes. In Havamál it is told that the wounded Odin hung for nine days. Possibly the name Yggdrasil is a paraphrase (kenning) referring to this pendant. At Ragnarök, it is said that Yggdrasil will tremble and groan but remain standing despite this.

Trees in other mythologies
Yggdrasil is the World Tree of the Asagods, and a similar World Tree also appears in Mayan mythology.

In Christianity, the tree of life appears in the form of the tree of knowledge in the garden of the oath. In the Book of Genesis, the Tree of Life appears as the tree whose fruit gives eternal life. The tree of life is also compared to the cross on which Jesus was crucified and it is said that the cross consisted of the same type of wood as from the tree of life and in stories it was said that Jesus was crucified in the same place where the seed of the tree of life took root in paradise.

In Buddhism, the Tree of Life appears as it is said that the Buddha becomes enlightened when he sits under a banyan tree, the sacred Bhodi tree.

In Asian myths, the tree is found as a sacred cult object in a variety of incarnations.
