The Guy Fawkes mask is a stylized depiction of Guy Fawkes, the most famous member of the gunpowder conspiracy or The Gunpowder Plot. Also known as Guido Fawkes or John Johnson, born April 13, 1570 in York, died January 31, 1606 in London, He was one of the Catholic conspirators who tried to assassinate James I by blowing up the English House of Lords in the Palace of Westminster in 1605, in what is known as the gunpowder conspiracy. Fawkes was one of the first conspirators to join the attack.

When Guy Fawkes was eight years old, his father Edward Fawkes died. His mother Edith later remarried to a Catholic. Fawkes later converted to Catholicism and ventured into continental Europe where he fought under the name Guido Fawkes in the Dutch War of Independence. Fawkes then traveled to Spain to seek support for a Catholic rebellion in England. However, his attempts were fruitless. He met Thomas Wintour and they both traveled back to England where they were introduced to Robert Catesby, the mastermind behind the conspiracy. Fawkes became involved in the conspiracy after a meeting on 20 May 1604. The conspirators managed to obtain a lease for a cellar vault located just below the English House of Lords and they put Fawkes in charge of the explosives stored there. However, the authorities were warned of the planned bombing in an anonymous letter and when they searched the Palace of Westminster in the early hours of 5 November 1605, they found Fawkes guarding the explosives. Over the next few days, Fawkes was interrogated and tortured before finally giving up and admitting his involvement in the conspiracy, which led to his later being sentenced to death by hanging, drawing and quartering. When he was to be hanged on January 31, 1606, Fawkes chose to jump off the gallows, breaking his neck and dying instantly.

Guy Fawkes is strongly associated with the failed Gunpowder Plot and his memory is commemorated on Guy Fawkes Night on November 5 each year in England. During the celebration, his effigy is burned on a bonfire, which is accompanied by fireworks. With the launch of the serial novel V for Vendetta in the 1980s, and the film based on it from 2005, a mask similar to Guy Fawkes has become internationally known as a symbol of protest.

After appearing in web forums, the mask became a well-known symbol of the online hacktivist group Anonymous, used in Project Chanology, the Occupy movement, Anonymous for the Voiceless, and other anti-government and anti-establishment protests around the world. This has led to the popular name Anonymous mask.
